Star Ricardo flies the flag for Britain
London Heathsider’s club record display just shy of 7,000 points total
DECATHLETE Ricardo Beckford smashed his personal best and racked up a club record as he starred as part of a winning British team at Ashford. The London Heathsider just missed out on the magic 7,000 points mark by totalling 6,993 in the decathlon at the under-23 and under-20 multi-events international match against France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Beckford’s Heathside colleagues also flew the flag for the club, winning the third London Inter Club Challenge fixture of the summer.
Fine performances at all ends of the age scale came in the high jump, with under-13 athlete Wale Olatunji making 1.45m and Adrian Essex scaling 1.30m in the over-50 men’s.
Heathside sit third and will look to finish at the top of the table if they can win their final match at Parliament Hill on August 9.
Athletes from Highgate Harriers will make a final tilt at their divisional play-offs on Saturday when they face the cream of the Division One Southern Men’s League at Sutcliffe Park.
Highgate currently sit ninth in the table after five matches, seven league points behind leaders Yeovil AC and will face stiff competition from Cambridge Harriers, Havering Maysbrook, Reading AC and Winchester on Saturday.
Only Winchester sit behind Highgate in the league but manager Richard Priestley remains optimistic of his team’s chances.
He said: “It’s probably the strongest match of the season that we’ve had to face. “We’ve got three of the top six clubs and it could go either way but we’ll give it our best shout.”
Harrier Stephen Whiting was sixth out of nearly 100 runners in the 5km run in Hyde Park on Friday.
Whiting was second over-40 in the race and completed the course in 16:44, with colleague Sally Hannah finishing in 20:59.
Over in Bushy Park, Highgate’s Chris Bailey took 19th position in the Weeding Day 7km race in 25:31.
