‘Axing post offices will hit the most vulnerable’ warning
A RETIRED post office clerk who won a Trade Union Congress award for long service has attacked her former employer over plans to close four branches in Camden.
Nicola Seyd, from Bloomsbury, spent three decades serving customers across the borough. Of the five offices where she worked – Southampton Row, King’s Cross, Parkway, Kentish Town and Swiss Cottage – only one is still a Crown post office. The rest have either closed or been hived off as franchises.
Mrs Seyd said: “Closing post offices is a terrible idea. They should be looking at ways of making existing branches work better. “Working in proper Crown post offices meant you could form a relationship with your customers. They came to trust you. “The idea of shutting post offices will affect those who need our help the most. It is sad to see what has happened to a service I spent many happy years working for.”
She was awarded a long-service badge in March from Camden Trades Federation Council – part of the TUC – for her life-long commitment to the Communication Workers Union.
The Post Office has earmarked branches in England’s Lane, Belsize Park, South End Road, Hampstead, Highgate High Street and Crowndale Road, Somers Town, for closure, claiming it is losing around £4 million a week nationwide and needs to shut 2,500 branches.
