MP set to go superphonic
EDUCATION secretary Ed Balls chose a King’s Cross primary school as an example of best practice as he tried to encourage teachers to use phonics, a system for learning where children piece
together sounds rather than letters to make words.
He visited Argyle School alongside education minister Lord Adonis and Sir Jim Rose, the former Ofsted chief.
The use of phonics is at the centre of a national debate with teachers disagreeing on what is the best way to teach reading.
But Mr Balls said: “We are clear that all schools should be using phonics now and this should be part of the basic training for teachers and teaching assistants. “We think at the moment probably around three-quarters would be using phonics in the really systematic way.” |
