Royal premiere for school’s first song
THE first school song in the 150-year history of Hampstead’s Royal School was performed during a visit by its patron, the Duchess of Cornwall, on Thursday. The Duchess toured the Rosslyn Hill school, meeting pupils and teachers.
The new school song was written by its director of music, Kate Casper.
Headteacher Jo Ebner-Landy said: “I was surprised to find the school never had its own song and this seemed a suitable occasion to commission one. It highlights our tradition and our modern outlook.”
The song’s chorus includes the words: “The Royal School of today, “Carries on the hopes of the past, “Building on skills for success in this world, “Making mem’ries and friends that last.”
The Duchess was shown art work by GCSE and A-level pupils which makes up the school’s summer exhibition.
The royal visitor was given a charm bracelet designed and crafted by sixth-formers.
The independent school for girls aged three to 18 was founded in 1855 for the daughters of soldiers serving in the Crimean War.
According to a verse of the new school song: “Many a war has come since. “And many soldiers died. “But here up in Hampstead by the Heath, we carry on with pride.”
The Duchess is the 14th member of the royal family to be named as patron, taking up the role last year when she succeeded Princess Alexandra.
