Station interchange plans put on hold

A MULTI-million pound scheme that would radically alter the face of West Hampstead could be scrapped.
The West Hampstead Interchange, which would link three stations in West End Lane by a walkway, has been in the planning stage for more than four years.
But the firm behind the interchange, John Laing Rail, confirmed this week that plans had been put on hold. This follows the company’s bid to operate the North London line, currently run by Silverlink.
Head of development Stuart Yeatman claimed the bid had forced a review of the scheme. He admitted that, even if attempts to take over the overland line were successful, he could not guarantee the interchange would go ahead. His firm expects a decision on the bid from Transport for London next month.
Virginia Berridge, chairwoman of West Hampstead Amenity and Transport, said she had been told by Laing the interchange scheme had “gone off the boil” since the firm was taken over by an assets company, Hendersons, in January.
She added: “Instead of this mega-scheme, we’re getting smaller initiatives that will have more benefit for West Hampstead.”
A Camden council press official said: “We are working with Transport for London on developing small-scale improvements to the interchange.”
